After studying piano and orchestral conducting at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts and the Karlsruhe University of Music, Cosima Sophia Osthoff began her theatrical career in 1990 at the Theater der Hansestadt Lübeck. She pursued her career as a conductor with determination via Oldenburg, Coburg and Trier, where she was already 1st Kapellmeister and Deputy GMD, before being appointed 1st Kapellmeister at the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen in 2001. She conducted countless productions there until 2008 and made a name for herself far beyond the city. She was repeatedly voted one of the best conductors in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Highlights of her work in Gelsenkirchen were certainly Rossini's “Il viaggio a Reims”, Berlioz's “La damnation de Faust”, Bizet's ‘Carmen’ and Detlev Glanert's “Der Spiegel des großen Kaisers”. She has also earned the highest respect by taking on works such as Wagner's “Parsifal”, Beethoven's ‘Fidelio’, Weber's “Der Freischütz” and the great operas of Mozart, Verdi and Puccini.

Over the course of her years as a conductor, she has developed a wide-ranging repertoire and has also conducted numerous symphony concerts. She has appeared with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Düsseldorfer and Nürnberger Symphoniker, the Bochumer Symphoniker, the Göttinger Symphonie-Orchester, the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz Ludwigshafen, the Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester Mannheim and the Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss am Rhein. She attaches particular importance to the intensive personal support and preparation of all those involved in a performance - soloists, choir and orchestra. This is the only way to create the dense and polished interpretation for which she has become known. In the concert field, critics have repeatedly praised her unconventional and exciting programs. She also enjoys working across genres and with unusual ensembles.

Cosima Sophia Osthoff was appointed professor at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts in 2008. From 2010 to 2017, she was head of the Institute for Music Theater and its musical director. In spring 2016, following the sudden death of Prof. Klaus Arp, she also took over the position of Professor of Orchestral Conducting and director of the university orchestra at short notice until the professorship was filled in fall 2017. Since then, in addition to her work at the Institute of Music Theatre, she has worked with Prof. Stefan Blunier to mentor young conductors in the field of orchestral conducting. She has taken over the professorship for orchestral conducting (with a focus on opera) at the newly founded Baden-Württemberg State Center for Conducting.

Mozart had a more intense artistic and human relationship with Mannheim than with any other German city. We are dedicating this evening in November to him.

In cooperation with the Mannheim State University of Music and Performing Arts, we are organizing our popular Mozart Gala as we do every year. The concert enables selected top young musicians to work with a professional orchestra.

The Mozart-Gesellschaft Kurpfalz e.V. will also be awarding its Mozart Soloist Prize 2025 as part of this event.
